I think you’re very engaging on camera. Seems like you’re on your way!
Hey thanks Zadi. I’m working on it. And thanks for the heads up on your blog. I thought that karmagirl was your only one.
That formula is tricky. In lots of cases, with video, I think there are two tricks (okay, three). One is just technical: clean audio. The next involves having something really engaging to say. Third? Chemistry. It’s that third that’s the beyotch. But you seem pretty personable. Sometimes, it’s just a passion connection that has to happen.
Some folks get ON FIRE when they talk about what matters. It’s not enough to have the tech.
Know how bands are when they’re talking about breakups and crappy times and people screwing them over? Metallica’s Master of Puppets vs. St. Anger. So…
Find something that really kicks you in the balls, go off on it, and I bet you’ll quinzillion-tuple your viewership.
Renetto, like a lot of higher profile YouTube people, got visible with a few high profile clips, in which he was more or less playing a quirky character, and he’s worked hard to sustain and build on that early rush of hits. A lot of what he’s involved in, though, is like the WWF Wrestling version of video blogging - he’s got his “beefs” with various other users, calling each out over…. well, I don’t follow all the beefs, so I couldn’t really say. But I can’t deny that I get sucked in from time to time. It’s like a reality show in which you can not only follow who’s got issues with who, but you can play your own small part (leave comments, post a response video). Which is not to say that’s better or worse than any other way of putting video out there. The response video mechanism on YouTube *is* a good way to build a little visibility, and there are conversations going on that have more substance than how YouTuber X is more of an “authentic” YouTuber than YouTuber Y (and then five rounds of snake-eatting-it’s-tail responses), but I guess my take is…. I don’t know that Renetto really has “the secret” in some special unique way. When it was a little easier to stand out above the crowd on YouTube, he took the ball and ran with it. You could always buy a Mexican wrestler mask…. but I think there’s a hunger for some more thoughtful content there than just “beef of the week…” There was a point in there somewhere, right?
Renetto finally responded to this and gave me some of the same tips Mark. He said the video responses were a big deal. Only problem is that is specific to YouTube. And I don’t want just viewers on youtube. To be honest I would prefer them not to be on youtube. Blip is so much better. But you gotta be where the people are right? Thanks for stopping by.
