I don’t really drink coffee, I drink tea. So I’ve never really gone to a Starbucks to work or meet up with friends. And the fact that I sold my laptop right around the time I started doing the whole online thing means I never really had the need to do so either. Well last month T-Mobile dropped the price of their total internet package by $10 allowing me to get HotSpots for the same price as I was already paying. Again, since I don’t have a “personal” laptop, don’t go to Starbucks regularly, and don’t do a lot of traveling, this wasn’t that big of a deal; but I made the switch anyways.
I knew that sometime this past Saturday I was going to have to get my oil changed and rotate my tires. So I packed up the laptop, dropped my truck off, and walked down to Starbucks to give the Hotspot a try. I ordered me a Green Tea and Lemonade, very tasty, and made my way to one of the tables in the corner. Once I was unloaded and fired up I began to do my thing. At first it felt like every other time I was on the net but after about 20 minutes or so I was digging the vibe of the shop. The random people coming and going; the cute girl behind the counter knowing everyone’s name and what they ordered; and even the annoying guy who obviously hung out their way too much eventually became part of the atmosphere. I could really start to see why people like Chris Brogan and Justine preferred to work at a place like this instead of just home. Home can get boring. Home can be distracting. Obviously there are distractions at the coffee shop but the distractions at home can make you stop what you’re doing. These, not so much.
At the end of it all, I felt great. I hadn’t got much done but the 2 hours I spent there was some much needed solo time. I don’t get much of that these days. Driving to and from work is about it. I can’t wait to get my Mac Book Pro and start doing this more often. I really miss being online and doing all the things I’m used to doing. Don’t get me wrong, I love this dad gig I have going on, but sometimes you just need to unplug from life, and plug into the net.

I agree. The first year I lived out here I had no high speed (yes I’m in the boonies
so I spent most of my time at the starbucks in Barnes & Noble. In fact I went there so much, the employees knew me by name. Now I don’t do that any longer, but I always enjoy the occassional change up from working at home.
Congrats! I’m totally with you there. Working from “out and about” is the only way to go! I try to do it as often as possible.
