ESPN on the verge of stepping up UFC coverage

Very exciting news just came across my rss reader. Straight from the pages of UFCMania:

Dana White is flying to New York “soon” to talk with ESPN executives about the worldwide leader in sports news increasing its UFC coverage, according to the Boston Herald.

I wonder if he realizes that ESPN headquarters is located in Bristol, Conn., and not New York?

Regardless, ESPN radio discussions, scattered interviews with the UFC president and other reports over the last few weeks and months have already hinted at this eventual reality.

However, it appears that ESPN is now closer than ever to finally giving its long-awaited — and long overdue — “mainstream” blessing of mixed martial arts.

Here’s a snip from White:
“All the top meetings over there are about the UFC. When they start talking about this stuff on ‘SportsCenter,’ that’s really going to help us. That’s going to help us get to the next level.”
Indeed, catching UFC highlights, interviews and Kenny Mayne exclusives with fighters on SportsCenter would be must-see television.

It was only a matter of time before this happened. And, it looks like that time is sometime 2007.

Better late than never.

I’m so excited about this. More UFC the better. I never watch EPSN; the only reason I know what channel it’s on is because I work for the cable company. The other sport that I’m really into and follow (Motocross/Supercross) never gets any coverage on ESPN either, so I never have a reason to flip to it. For the most part I get all my news and info from the net. But now it would seem as if SportsCenter might actually have something for me very soon.

UFC Fight Night - After the Fight

Holy shit. That’s the first thing that comes to mind about tonight’s fights. First off, I have to say that I’m a bit pissed that even though it says live all over the place and the announcers say it about 50 times, the fight is not live and if I had satallite I could actually watch it live. I mean, baseball games aren’t taped and shown 2 hours later nor are football games. Why the hell do my UFC events get recorded? Whatever.

So back to tonight’s fights. My predictions were 50/50. Spencer Fischer ended up losing to a tko which I was ok with because Franca is a bad ass. Hermes Franca Wins by Technical Knock Out at 3:30 in the 2nd round. Then we had Jake O’Brien Winning by Unanimous Decision at 5:00 in the 3rd round which I have never heard of either one of these guys but picked “The Texas Crazy Horse” mainly from what I saw in the ads. Third fight was one I was looking forward to, a little. Ed Herman Vs. Chris Price where Ed Herman Wins by Submission at 2:58 in the 1st round by arm bar. It was a great change up going from his back right into the arm bar. Then finally, the main event; Rashad Evans Vs. Sean Salmon. Rashad was the heavyweight winner on the Ultimate Fighter season 2 and has been undefeated with a record of 14-0. He adds another notch to his belt with a devastating kick to the head at 1:06 in the 1st round. I mean this dude got hit and turned into a board and fell like a sack of shit. Even after Joe Rogan was interviewing Rashad about the win Salmon was still down. In the imortal words of Smokey “You got knocked the fuck out!”

It was a great night for “free” fights and just gets me even more pumped for February 3rd, UFC 67: All or Nothing.
